Meeting Notification Reminder, February 2, 2023 7:00 AM Stevies Cafe, Rice Lake
Good Afternoon All,
Reminding you that we have our meeting this Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Stevies Cafe. Kathy is hosting and we will have Addison Leaf, a Rice Lake Student who went on a Rotary Summer Exchange to share with us her experience.
Last week, Ken hosted (with help from Joe) and Peg Martin (from the Rice Lake Noon club) came to our meeting with some of our student representatives from Italy and the Chek Republic that are part of the Rotary Student Exchange Program. It was a fun presentation with two delightful high schoolers. Thank you Ken and Joe!
We also officially welcomed Ana in to our club! The club also voted to donate $100 to the Lake Desair project.

Several people have remarked that I don’t ask for money when I come out to the clubs to speak. They say that it's refreshing. Truth be told, that’s not my focus, not my goal. That does not mean, however, that I don’t believe in the good of our foundation. I support the Rotary Foundation every year. If you speak with professional fundraisers, they will tell you that the average person gives to 5 charitable organizations on a regular basis. For those who are involved in organized religion, that is one of the five. That leaves four more and these are typically related to something that has personally touched the individual. For example, that would include organizations related to a specific medical condition (cancer, ALS, dementia), veterans organizations, alma maters, and personal passions. The key for these fundraisers is figuring out how to get more people to put their organization on their list.
Let me explain why our Rotary Foundation is on my list. Based on some very sage advice from a good friend, financial planner, and Rotarian, I determine each year how much money I need to pay basic expenses, followed by money needed to be placed aside for retirement, followed by money for long term large expenses, and then what I plan to give away. It’s a conscious decision. And yes our Rotary Foundation is on my list every year. Here’s why. I know that the money I give is getting used for its intended purpose. It is not going to administrative costs, or advertising in hopes of getting more money, or lining someone’s pocket. I have looked at many other organizations and few come close. As important as the amazing stewardship, is the fact that I believe in doing good in the world. I want to make the world a better place. Yes, helping my community is important, it is part of the world. But the need is worldwide, not just in my backyard. I like knowing that my money is responsible in part for providing wells in Africa and Central and South America. That it provides light to people without electricity. That it provides medical aid and generators to people in war torn Ukraine and yes it helps the hungry throughout the United States.
Please talk to your club members about this. The district is running a campaign during the month of February, the information is attached below along with a powerpoint presentation for you to use. Looking for inspiration, pick one of the videos on the RI page and show it at the start of your meeting. In a country where a cup of coffee is easily $5 and going out to the bar can cost $10-15 for a single cocktail. Surely, we all can donate something to our foundation and together make the world a better place for all. No amount is too small.
A letter will be going out to all members of our district on February 1st concerning the February drive. Please don’t let it fall on deaf ears.

He does an exercise with the audience that measures their technology consumption and discusses the effects of our social media and cellphone engagement. He also tailors his talk to specific requests, such as effects on our personal relationships, productivity in the workplace, education, political polarization, and/or post-lockdown uses of technology and where we go from here. You can reach out directly to him at deanopape@gmail.com.
2. Annie Nolte-Henning - Annie is Director of the Americas for Alight (previously the American Refugee Committee) - she is knowledgeable and inspiring. If she can't come and talk, she has a staff that can. Very cool. Give her a ring 402.297.2368

A. “Rotary- Doing Good, Serious Fun” - Doing good and having fun should be what Rotary is all about…but what is “Serious Fun”? And are we really doing as much and having as much fun as we could? Let’s talk about why “Doing Good, Serious Fun” should be a Rotary mantra to live by, how it fits with Rotary President Jennifer Jones’s theme of “Imagine Rotary” and how we can engage our members to maximize the good…and the fun!
B. Principles of Effective Fundraising - Club fundraisers are more than about raising money, they should engage your members and the community as well. Learn principles that enhance your member participation and increase your fundraising results. Whether it be making $5,000-$10,000 in a small event or $1,000,000 in a major music festival (an actual Rotary example we'll talk about!), the principles are the same...and will lead to more impact in your community!
C. The Importance of Telling Our Rotary Story - Every Rotarian has a Rotary story, and telling our Rotary stories is the best way to show non-Rotarians who we are and what we do. Rotary Public Image Coordinator (Zones 25B &29) Kyle Haugen will share motivational tips on how to develop and tell our Rotary stories, which will lead to more understanding of our organization and get people excited to join us!
Alright. That's it. Life is good. Remember compared to 95% of the people on this earth we live like kings and queens. Count your blessings and make someone's day a bit better. Until next week....
Please let Trudy know your program speaker as soon as possible. Thanks!
If you want a Zoom link - let Joe Erickson know by MONDAY before our Thursday meetings.
