REMINDER - ROSE DAY Oct. 24

No meeting at Stevie's Cafe

Reminding everyone that it is Rose Day this Thursday. There is no meeting at Stevies in the morning. Roses will be ready for you to pick up at the Rice Lake Mall at 8:00 am. If you would like to join us for breakfast prior to Rose pick up - we will be dining with noon club members at 7:00 am at Maxine's Cafe.

For those of you picking up your roses - bring your stubs with you to the mall and give me your numbers and/or cash (if you have not already done so). For those of you who are having your recipients pick up their own - please bring me those stubs first thing Thursday morning so we have a record that the person actually paid for their roses. Either way - if you have questions you can call or text me at 715-790-2529. We are sitting pretty good with about 170 doz. sold but the more we sell the more money we can give away!! You can turn in your money to me at the Mall on the 24th or you can bring it to our wrap up meeting on the 31st.

Last Thursday we had our inaugural Bourbon Tasting event and it was a WONDERFUL evening. There were approximately 90 in attendance, we had music, we had decorations, we had bourbon and awesome food, and we had fellowship. Looking forward to our wrap-up meeting on Oct. 31 to find out how successful the event was. Thank you to Dean and committee for organizing, thank you to all who helped in some way and thank you to those who donated silent auction items. Here are a few pics to share.

BJ, Jim and Jason S. will be completing an audit on our books.

We are still looking for a new Treasurer starting in July 2025. Kathy will be retiring and won't have the same technology availability. If you are interested please let her or any board member know now - you can get a LOT of training in ahead of time.

Also, if someone is interested in doing some PR (facebook and/or web page) we could use your help!

UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

Reminder we began our trial on the new meeting system of two formal meetings per month (Oct. is an exception) and one social event. The social event will be planned by two club members as part of the meeting host rotation. Please be flexible and open minded - this is a trial. You will get information each week - you just need to read the bulletin ;-) and mark your calendars!

October will have meetings all month due to the DG visit, Bourbon Tasting and Rose Sales Events.

Oct. 24 - Rotary Rose Day - No morning meeting - those who want to help can attend breakfast at Maxines at 7 AM - please be sure to deliver your roses or have the buyers pick them up on the 24th. You can turn in Rose $ at the Mall at 8 am or at our meeting on the 31st.

Oct. 31 - Meeting - no speaker - wrap up of Bourbon Tasting and Rose Sales.

October 24 is also Polio Plus Day! We did take a pass the hat donation in our club - during our wrap up meeting we will find out how much we will be sending in on behalf of our club. In Pakistan, the GPEI is working closely with the government to ensure that polio eradication remains a top priority. Each National Immunization Day, more than 285,000 health workers attempt to vaccinate over 40 million children. To better reach high-risk populations, the program recruits polio workers from the same communities affected by polio and is expanding its integration with other essential health services. The country’s vast environmental surveillance network — the largest of its kind with 65 sites strategically located in 44 districts across the country — continues to expand to ensure it can accurately track any incidence of wild polio.

In Afghanistan, persistent access issues have created immunity gaps amid current insecurity and a broader economic and humanitarian crisis. The resumption of regular vaccination campaigns in late 2021, including in parts of the country that were inaccessible for more than three and a half years, has provided a significant opportunity to reach more children with vaccines. However, the broader health system remains vulnerable. The GPEI is implementing interventions to improve surveillance and access in hard to-reach areas, including engagement with religious and community leaders to encourage vaccine acceptance and coordination with Pakistan to synchronize campaigns and reach mobile populations across the transnational border

WHAT IS POLIO?

The Disease

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.

Most know it as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 3 billion children worldwide.
